Vintage T-Shirts for the Trendy Nostalgic

August 20, 2010 by Staff Writer

Anyone who is a fan of t-shirt culture owns one or more vintage t-shirts. You know those cracked, peeled, faded, washed-out tees that have survived the years of our youth? The ones that transport us back to the days before the Internet happened? The ones that we can put on with simply a pair of jeans and old sneakers and inspire a feel-good rest of the day?

Yes, those.

Vintage t-shirts are making a comeback in the world of fashion – or it may be the case that they never left at all. That’s why, in an effort to ride the popularity of these tees – which can include old sports shirts, band shirts, retro tees, novelty t-shirts that bank on our nostalgia, funny t-shirts, among many other categories and designs – more t-shirt manufacturers are using thinner, softer cotton that looks as though it’s been washed hundreds of times throughout the course of years, even decades. It’s new – but it looks old: a different but equally stylish treatment that one might get from the shops of a high street. It’s not just the concept or design of the shirt that’s retro or vintage – but also the look and feel of it.

Vintage t-shirts come in a wide variety of design themes and eras. They are a perfect fit not only for the trendy and stylish, but also for the nostalgic and “old school”.

Sports teams: A lot of vintage t-shirts are made for sports fans. Because most professional sports teams today change colors and logos almost every season, it’s such a breath of fresh air to see the teams in the NBA, NFL, MLB, and NHL on our vintage t-shirts – with logos and colors that are just the way we remember them from childhood: classic. (Ah, to revive the Michael Jordan days in Chicago!) Novelty t-shirts based on one-time sporting events and souvenir-heavy games, like Olympic shirts or World Cup tees, can also turn vintage in a matter of a few years.

Retail brands: Wouldn’t it be cool to have vintage t-shirts that display the logos of today’s favorite and most famous brands? Apple. Adidas. McDonald’s. Nike. Coca-Cola. The logos of these companies have gone through plenty of evolution through the years; with a vintage tee, we can go right back to the start of that evolution.

Geek and gamer: Vintage tee and novelty t-shirt manufacturers are coming up with designs that are made for the geek and gamer demographic. And why not? An Atari logo shirt or a Nintendo ES or Super Famicom tee will definitely bring back old school memories of a time before PlayStations and XBoxs and Wiis. Funny t-shirts can also help us poke good nostalgic fun at ourselves for having gone gaga over games like Super Mario, Duck Hunt, and the Legend of Zelda.

Music: There is nothing quite as vintage as tees featuring images and logos of popular musicians: rock and roll bands, in particular. Who wouldn’t look cool wearing band vintage t-shirts for AC/DC, the Beatles, the Ramones, the Clash, Beach Boys, or Led Zeppelin? Of course, we can also go for individual musicians, like Janis Joplin, David Bowie, John Lennon, Bob Marley, and Freddy Mercury. Add to that the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson, whose death last year seemed to have inspired novelty t-shirts honoring his musical legacy.

Places: Vintage t-shirts aren’t only a way of remembering; they can also be a way of representing. Show off your roots by wearing tees that tell others which state or city you’re from. I Love New York, Sweet Home Alabama, Illinois (Please don’t pronounce the S), and Hawaiian Aloha vintage tees are only some of the great examples.

Movies and TV shows: Nothing says you’re a fan better than a vintage tee or novelty t-shirt does. If you grew up watching and having fond memories of Star Wars, Superman, the Flintstones, the Smurfs, or Where the Wild Things Are, then getting vintage t-shirts of these popular movies and shows is just a shop away. Of course, there are also vintage t-shirts for more esoteric interests: all you have to do is browse the Web for some real nice tees.
